WHAT I'M UP TO:

Rick McWatter’s Retirement Partaaayyy : Photobooth Portraits

Wilson’s Platoon Chef, Rick, retired so the guys threw him a surprise party in Markham Unionville just down the street from the station.  It was really interesting to hear stories about the committment and comradery in the fire department.  I mean, I hear and see stories from Wilson but there were a lot of retirees there and it’s different to hear stories from the tailend of the journey (Rick retired after 35 of service).  One thing in particular that resonated with me was when George, the new Platoon Chef, thanked Rick for his mentoring.  When it was Rick’s turn to speak, he too thanked his mentors.  It was moving to see how humble a lot of the guys are at the hall and at the cusp of self-achievement, they still recognized and acknowledged the person (people) who showed them the ropes, however long ago.

The Potrait session was really fun because when you guy these guys together they’re like a bunch of frat bros (yes, even the retirees).  The images that usually catch my eye the most are the ones that are seemingly random.  The ones that show unconventional moments and reveal character.  They usually involve movement or just when the subjects no longer see the camera and feel like they’re standing there talking to me, Claudiaaaa.  I like portraits.
